Dr Melissa Harrison - "In Defence of Stress – Building Capacity"
Time & Location
About the Event
Over the past decade, there has been a marked increase in interest in Stress Management. This interest is evident in the proliferation in workshops where participants are purposefully alerted to, and alarmed by, the debilitating impact of stress. They are encouraged to reduce stress by better managing workloads, streamlining systems, and establishing a balance between personal, family and work lives. Unfortunately, an unexpected consequence of this development has been additional stress and accompanying feelings of failure, particularly in the case of high-performing professionals, as they fail to tame the sacred cows of popular wellness by achieving “stress management”, “work/life balance” or “leaning in”. Moreover, some misunderstandings about positive psychology leave workers feeling guilty about not always feeling and thinking positively.
This presentation offers an antidote to this approach, encouraging a more nuanced appreciation of stress in light of recent scientific literature. Learn how to appreciate stress for what it really is, buffer rather than manage stress, focus on that which is within your control and decide when fundamental, rather than peripheral changes are required.
